BAD: Don't try to put over size bulbs in any light fixture, specially on ceiling mounted fixtures. What happens is that the heat of the oversize bulb heats up the wiring and can cause costly damage on the fixture and building wiring.

GOOD: Check the light socket, it usually says the Max. wattage. If it does not say it, here are a couple of tips. If the socket is made out of plastic (usually black) then the Max. is about 60 Watts, if it's made out of porcelain (usually white) then it could take up to 600 Watts, but it is not recommended. To reduce wiring damage use only 60W on plastic sockets and 100W on porcelain sockets. If the fixture is a multiple light socket fixture, it is recommended not to exceed 250W. total.

BAD: If you have a water leak and it's coming through the fixture DO NOT turn on the light.

GOOD: Wait until the leak has stopped and then about 3 days after, so that the wiring dries up.

BAD: If you have an electric heater, toaster, microwave, an air conditioner, etc. do not plug it into a convenience outlet or it could damage the wiring.

GOOD: These type of appliances should have their own separate lines to the circuit breaker panel. If you don't, have one put in.
